Royal London Hospital School

The Royal London Hospital School exists to ensure children have access to high quality education whilst they are an inpatient at The Royal London Hospital in Whitechapel.

We aim to give children the opportunity to continue with their education as and when they are well enough and in between their medical treatments. We work closely with children’s home schools, parents and medical teams to facilitate a sense of normality and consistency during their period of hospitalisation.

We aim to teach all inpatients that are of school age, with lessons taking place either in the school rooms or by bedside. We have a core curriculum which comprises of English, Maths, PSHE and Creative Arts. This is taught alongside work from pupils’ schools. For pupils with profound and multiple learning difficulties we have a sensory curriculum delivered by our Complex Needs Team.

We also have long standing partnerships with The London Symphony Orchestra and The Royal Academy of Music who deliver workshops to our pupils on a regular basis.

We have a focus on children’s emotional and mental wellbeing and try to build a familiar routine for children around their medical treatments. We personalise each pupil’s learning journey, drawing on data from our initial assessments, information from their home schools and by accessing their virtual learning environments. Our aim is through cultivating positive relationships and careful planning to reduce children’s anxiety around hospitalisation and enable them to build a sense of resilience, so they feel empowered to continue with their education even under difficult circumstances.
