Personal Development & Enrichment at LEAP

Careers Trip - 2024

At LEAP we offer a range of extra-curricular activities which give opportunities for students to get exposure and experience in different fields. We encourage students to partake in these activities so they can deepen their learning or experience. We believe that trips and workshops are an essential part of the curriculum at LEAP.

Earlier this year 11E students visited Queen Mary university library where they were allowed to see archives and textbooks dated back to the 17th century. During the visit students were able to see student hall, lecture theatre and talk to university students. On campus we had the opportunity to see the canteen and walk around and see what student life was like.

Uni

Whitechapel Helipad visit which is based on the top of the 17th floor280 feet above the street. Students were allowed to explore the 80m runway which was very scary. Students had the opportunity to ask questions to NHS staff about working as a paramedic/NHS.

Whitechapel QM

Students had the opportunity to look and explore careers and different career pathways at the ‘What Next’ careers event at Olympia. TFL, NHS, BP and other providers explained the different ways to join their team to LEAP students. This was an amazing opportunity to students to look at different job fields. Many students filled in application forms and made career enquires and signed up for workshops.

Students in inclusion had the opportunity to visit Sky Garden which is London’s highest public sky garden. Known as the walkie talkie building students were able to see 360-degree views of London’s skyline. Tickets are limited so students were excited to see the different plants and get in touch of nature. Students were also exploring the different use of technology that works within the building.

Careers Event

London Zoo reward trip allowed hands on learning to all the students that attended. None of the students had visited a zoo before and so this was a great opportunity to awaken their empathy with the natural world.  Students were able to see the different animals and also understood the importance of protecting the environment for animals.

Extra-Curricular Music at LEAP 2023/2024

We have been fortunate enough to have had many professional music workshops visit us in the past two academic years. These include:

Conductive Music

A workshop bringing Music, the Sciences and Creativity together, in a fantastic new series of experiences that enables students to express their creativity through music, embrace failure, and to boost resilience and to grow - independently - through trial and error.

World Heartbeat

An ongoing project working with Y10 and Y12 students offering the chance to work with industry-established music technology experts and performers to expand their knowledge and hone their skills with Digital Audio Workstations such as Logic Pro X, Ableton, and FL Studios.

EartH (Evolutionary Arts Hackney)

A multi-arts space for the 21st century. A select few of our most promising music students have been visiting this incredible space weekly to learn about the many different roles within a professional recording space and live music venue, from performing and studio-engineering to beat-making and DJ-ing.

English Touring Opera

Members of this exciting and accessible live opera collective are working with our Y11 students this term to create a multi-media project which will feature songwriting, performance, sound and video editing, resulting in a fully-formed piece of work that will be performed live for the students' Music Level 2 Controlled External Assessment.

Showcases at KS3

KS3 students on transitional placements or back to school placements perform termly to staff, parents and professionals, with their chosen pieces, singing and dancing. This is a hugely popular event, which is well attended by all stakeholders at LEAP.

KS3 Zombie Movie

KS3 students write, perform and produce a zombie movie each year. The film is shown in our local cinema and has become a favourite with staff, parents and professionals alike. Students produce and create everything in connection with the movie: music, posters, make-up, script, acting, recording. A much loved and popular staple in the LEAP calendar.

Art Exhibition 'Never Sleeps' - 2023/2024

‘NEVER SLEEP’ An exhibition by students at London East Alternative Provision with Edwin Mingard Chisenhale Project Space, 371 Roman Road, E3 5QW 14 December - 17 December, 2023 Never Sleep brings together a series of new works and works-in-progress by a group of 20 students at London East Alternative Provision. Developed with artist Edwin Mingard, the group has explored the psychological and environmental pressures affecting young people and considered assumptions about who gets to be an artist. Conceived as an imaginative extension of the workshop setting, Never Sleep exists as an expanded installation across three rooms of 371 Roman Road, a temporary project space connected to Chisenhale Gallery. Moving and still images and 3-D objects are presented in situ. Evoking the often-improvisational nature of their production, these fragments play with pose and projection to surface clues about the artists’ Never Sleep is an invitation to an experience outside the mainstream, and an introduction to the artists on their own terms. Artists: BJ, youngadz, AJ, Emmalee-Rose, YH, Laila, Peaceful Kayd, Kia, Thalia, Lizzie and artists who wish to remain anonymous. With special thanks to Lennox Barton and all the teachers and staff at London East Alternative Provision. Edwin Mingard (b. 1984, London) lives and works in London. Mingard is ais a visual artist whose work explores urgent social issues, often through collaborative making. His work has been shown in galleries and festivals in the UK and Europe. He is currently developing research project at Chisenhale gallery. Chisenhale Gallery was founded by artists. The same experimental vision and spirit of possibility that changed an empty veneer factory and brewery warehouse into an art gallery, guides our work today. Our mission is to commission new works of art, supporting artists at every stage of project development, from concept to completion. The gallery has an award winning, 40-year history as one of London’s most innovative spaces for contemporary art. Building on this rich and varied history, we continue to place artists at the centre of everything we do. Citizenship Action Project: 'Charity Cake Sale @ LEAP' 2024

As part of the student development curriculum at LEAP we put on a Citizenship action project. During this project we link the activities to future career’s in charity and business. We look at empathy and understanding, in addition to becoming good citizens of the world.

  • Students spend time in their GCSE Citizenship lessons choosing a cause they would like to raise money for.
  • They create posters, PowerPoints, send letters to our local MP, create surveys, undertake interviews and deliver assemblies.
  • They then find a way to fundraise; this year we put on a sweet and bake sale.
  • The students raised over £200 to be donated to Crisis homeless charity and relief in Palestine.
